Specific Gravity and Viscosity

Specific Gravity and Viscosity

Directly relates to the density of a substance compared to a reference (usually water).

The liquid on the right has a higher specific gravity due to it having a more “dense,” “sticky,” or “viscous” structure when dropped or poured.

The specific gravity can be compared for similar essential oils. This number can be one of the values to look for when looking for contaminated oils.

Low Specific Gravity: Mandarin Green      .85 High Specific Gravity: Sweet Birch 1.14
